Rein work preliminaries for the Snaffle Bit Futurity Open divisions began Friday, Sept. 25, at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center. See highlights and the leader board in the current edition of the Reno Wrap Up – and we also go behind the scenes with National Reined Cow Horse Association Veterinarian, Dr. Joe Carter.

Futurity Open

In the Futurity Open rein work prelims, two horses and riders earned a 223, the high score of the day.

The first horse to do it was Smartly Starstruck (Very Smart Remedy x Katie Starlight x Grays Starlight), shown by NRCHA Million Dollar Rider Todd Bergen. Smartly Starstruck is a stallion owned by CTC Equine Assets LLC.

The other 223 score came late in the day, when Chris Dawson, riding for co-owners Carol Rose and Dickson Varner, made a big run on Shiney Sparklette (Shining Spark x Docs Sulena x Doc O’Lena)

Futurity Open Composite

There is a tie for the lead in the Open after two events. Identical 441 scores belong to Nicolas Barthelemy and Mr Shiney Lights (CD Lights x Lil Miss Shiney Chex x Shining Spark), owned by Sheri Jamieson, and SJR Diamond Rey (Dual Rey x Shiners Diamond Girl x Shining Spark), owned by San Juan Ranch. Barthelemy and Mr Shiney Lights also lead the Intermediate Open composite.

Intermediate, Limited & Level 1 Limited Open

The name to remember in the Intermediate, Limited and Level 1 Limited Open rein work was Hickorys Prize Doll (Smokums Prize x Hickorys Poco Doll x Doc’s Hickory), shown by Russell Probert and owned by Wyatt Fisher, Nipomo, California. The mare scored a 221 to lead the go-round in the Intermediate Open, Limited Open and Level 1 Limited Open.
